On this table we will discuss how neighborhoods are experienced and understood differently by people of different genders. We will start by drawing a joint picture of how neighborhoods areshared both spatially and temporally on the basis of gender. Then we will complicate the matter and question the role of difference within a defined gender, whether it stems from racial categories, class habitus, religiousbeliefs or migration histories. Finally, we will ask: who has a right to the neighbourhood? Who can have it without a question and who has to fight for it? Hence how can we understand the struggles for gendered rights to the city within the context of neighborhoods?
Dr. Hilal Alkan holds an MA inSociology from Boğaziçi University and a PhD in Political Science from the Open University UK. After working on charitable giving, poverty alleviation and social citizenship, she has directed her focus on Syrian migration to Turkey and Germany. Since 2016, she is based in Berlin first as a EUME fellow of ForumTransregionale Studies, then as a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient Berlin, writing on her research on neighbourhood initiatives aiding Syrian migrants in Istanbul. At the moment, she is working on her new project that aims to compare migrants’ settlement experiences in Turkey and Germany. Her research interests include gendered urban formations, women’s experiences of war and peace and charitable giving/humanitarian aid.
Dr. Elena Vacchelli is Associate Professor in Sociology at the University of Greenwich. Elena’s teaching and research interests include migration, diversity and social inequality; gender and space; embodiment; art-based and digital research methodologies. Substantial experience in researching diversity and gender in the UK and Europe was acquired through work with European institutions, third sector organisations and local authorities. The outputs of her research have been published in several leading peer-reviewed international journals. Her latest book “Embodied research inmigration studies. Using creative and participatory approaches” was published in 2018 by Policy Press, Bristol.
